 The Three Lions were beaten by their old enemy again, penalties, after taking the Azzurri all the way in the final but the trophy will go to Rome rather than home

England were beaten by Italy in the final of Euro 2020 on penalties.

Three young Lions missed their spot kicks after taking the Azzurri the full distance.

Luke Shaw got Gareth Southgate’s side off to the perfect start after two minutes.

The Three Lions got off to a dream start, with Luke Shaw scoring the fastest ever goal in a European Championship final after just one minute and 57 seconds.

However, Italy got back on level terms in the second-half, with Bonucci scoring after a goalmouth scramble.

Jordan Pickford did his best in the shootout with some heroic goalkeeping before Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho missed, having both been brought on to take a penalty.

Bukayo Saka then missed the decisive spot kick to give Italy the trophy.

Speaking to RAI Sport, Italy's manager Roberto Mancini said: "We did well. We conceded a goal straight away and struggled, but then we dominated the game.

"The lads were wonderful, I don't know what more to say. It's important for all the people and all the fans. I hope they're celebrating."

Reacting to Italy's triumph, Leonardo Bonucci said: "It's incredible, when I think back to where we started.

"When you are at the bottom of the hole, you see how great men regain their strength.

"I want to say thank you to our great coach, our great team, our great country.

"We are full of joy and happiness."

Italy defender Georgio Chiellini says his nation deserved to win the final.

"We deserved to win, we felt there was something special in the air," the Azzurri captain said.

"We deserve it, all of Italy deserves it. Now let's enjoy it! We deserve this victory."

England captain Harry Kane says his side gave everything they could speaking to BBC Sport post-match.

"The boys couldn't have give more. Penalties obviously, it’s the worst feeling in the world when you lose," Kane said. "It’s been a fantastic tournament and we should hold our heads up high but of course it’s going to hurt now, it’s going to hurt for a while. We’re on the right track and we’re building and hopefully we can progress from this next year."

"We’re playing against a very good side. We got off to the perfect start. Maybe dropped a little bit too deep. Sometimes when you score that early it’s easy to try and soak up the pressure and try hold onto that and that’s probably what happened. They had a lot of the ball, they had a lot of possession but to be fair we looked fairly in control. We didn’t create too many chances then obviously they got their breakthrough from the set-piece and then after that it was probably a 50/50.

"In extra-time we grew into the game, had a few half-chances then obviously penalties is penalties. We went through our process. The boys did everything they could, it just wasn’t our night."
